Recording Your Blood Pressure Readings
Please follow the instructions on your home blood pressure machine or refer to the guidance on the website.
What does the reading mean and how should you record it?
Blood pessure measures how strongly blood presses against the walls of your arteries (large blood vessels) as it is pumped around your body by your heart. It is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and it is recorded as two numbers – a higher number called the systolic and a lower number called the diastolic. It is recorded with the higher systolic number displayed over the lower diastolic.
For example, a blood pressure with the higher systolic reading of 138 and the lower diastolic reading of 78 is recorded as 138/78.
